Can I bring the electric scooter onto the bus?
Depending on the city, it may or may not be allowed. Below, we highlight some cities.
Generally, yes, but an increasing number of cities are prohibiting it.
In Barcelona, it has been decided to prohibit electric scooters on public transportation, a regulation that will come into effect on February 1, 2023. To make this decision, the Barcelona City Council has used the regulations for airplanes as a reference, where passengers are not allowed to bring lithium batteries on commercial flights.
In Seville, according to the regulations of Tussam, the municipal transport company, you can bring it as long as it is folded and inside its case, as long as it doesn’t disturb anyone or obstruct the passage of other users.
In Madrid, for the time being, electric scooters can also be carried.
However, it should be noted that when using this mode of transportation for a trip, riding the scooter on the bus is prohibited, but you can store it in the lower part of the coach, that is, in the luggage compartment where suitcases are stored.
We understand that it may give you some hesitation to leave it there, as people often place their luggage and belongings without much care. Specifically, the peak hours are from 7:30 to 9:30, 13:30 to 15:30, and in the evening, from 18:30 to 20:30. As for the capital, Madrid, there haven’t been any prohibitions established at the moment.
Can I bring the electric scooter on the airplane?
Due to the increasing use of electric scooters for fast city transportation, many tourists wonder if they can bring this mode of transportation on the plane to visit their destination.
We inform you that, in general, no airline allows electric scooters on the plane, neither in the cabin nor as checked baggage.
This is because, according to the current regulations of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), passengers are not allowed to carry lithium batteries on passenger planes.
These batteries can overcharge, and due to the changes in pressure on the plane, they could potentially cause an explosion. That’s why only items with very small batteries, such as mobile phones or laptops, are allowed.
Can I travel with an electric scooter on a boat?
Are you going on a cruise this summer and thinking about taking your electric scooter? Not sure if you can bring it on board?
Well, the answer is that it depends on the cruise line we are talking about. For example, MSC Cruises clearly states in its regulations that electric scooters cannot be brought on board, but other companies do not make it clear whether it is allowed or not.
For example, the company FRS, which connects Algeciras with Tangier by ferry, allows crossing the strait with an electric scooter as luggage.
Our recommendation is that before purchasing cruise or boat tickets, you should check the allowed and prohibited baggage conditions of the company. If you are unsure, it’s best to contact the company directly.
